Medical dramas continue to thrive on small screens, striking gold in the ratings war. Driven by an effective formula already proven successful in earlier hits like The Great White Tower and Surgeon Bong Dal Hee, New Heart entails a coming-of-age story centering on the public and private lives of four cardiac surgeons. During its broadcast in Korea, the drama garnered much attention and media coverage with each of its episode's highlights making the next day's headlines. While providing a wealth of medical knowledge and insights into the working lives of doctors, New Heart also digs into the grimmer side of the profession, touching on subjects like the fierce competition among peers and the ongoing problems of fraud and abuse in the healthcare system. Adding a dash of humanity and warmth into his character, Ji Sung (Save Your Last Dance For Me), in his first drama after returning from military service, plays Eun Sung, a charming first-year resident with a heart of gold. Temperature creeps up in the chilly operating room as Kim Min Jung (Stranger Than Paradise), who plays a perky, gung-ho resident, heats up the three-way romance with Ji Sung and Lee Ji Hoon (Billy Jean Look at Me). Taking the drama's finesse up a notch is Cho Jae Hyun (Piano) who delivers a stellar performance. Cho portrays a chief surgeon with no-nonsense mannerism and ingenious expertise who becomes the first doctor in the nation to perform a successful heart transplant.
The newly appointed director of Kwang Hee University Hospital, Jae Hyun tries to dissuade his secret daughter Hye Seok (Kim Min Jung) from pursuing her career as a cardiac surgeon, while keeping her relation to him under wraps. Meanwhile, Kang Kook (Cho Jae Hyun), a maverick medical genius recently demoted to a second-tier hospital, gets involves in a nasty brawl and injures a man. Quickly checking into a nearby emergency room, Kang Kook starts treating the man and Eun Sung (Ji Sung), an intern who witnesses Kang Kook's brilliance in action, decides to follow in the footsteps of the master. Soon after, Kang Kook is asked to head the cardiology department of Kwang Hee University Hospital. The job entails many headaches for the straight-arrow surgeon - one being his decision to deny residency to two applicants: Eun Sung and Hye Seok. After a few struggles, Kang Kook caves in and accepts them as junior registrars, but watches their every move like a hawk.
