Tale of Two Sisters is based on an old tale from the Joseon Dynasty. It's a well-known tale about two sisters who are killed by their step-mother and take revenge on her as ghosts. The movie, however, is a creative adaptation that shows how the most trusted relationship in family turns into the most dreadful one. Two sisters, Su-yeon and Su-mi come back home from a mental hospital recovering from an unnamed illness. Their stepmother makes an effort to welcome them but the sisters don't appreciate her efforts. Su-mi, the elder sister, always looks after her father and her sister while the younger sister, Su-yeon, the spitting image of her mother, is always in fear of something. Eun-ju, the step-mother, is a nervous woman who clashes with the sisters as they shun her. Meanwhile the father, Mu-hyeon, remains isolated from all the household tension. Then Eun-ju becomes more and more hysterical driving the home into a place of fear... Instead of spooky sounds, melancholic and beautiful music plays to absorb the audience gradually into the inner fear of characters.
